I wonder if Mouw is actually an agnostic?
He also likes to "travel-drop". You will notice how he frequently uses his latest big trip as a catalyst for an article. He's the sophisticated traveler (he did grow up,for that matter,in new jersey,so he's a little bit superior to us midwesterners & westcoasters). And notice he must mention fine-dining ("salmon dinner" back at the cottage). He also often makes sure people know he's not a "pastor" but a philosopher (also his idea of being superior) or maybe he sometimes claims to be a "theologian" (notice he mentions the theologian in a bar). He likes to use "common man" events in his titles, and then differentiate himself from such (he also has a book entitled "the smell of sawdust" even though he has probably never lifted a chainsaw nor chopped wood in his life). But what does it say about being Christian (he is also sarcastic towards so-called "primitive Christianity" ie reducing faith practice to as similar to the early Christians as possible)? What Mouw really smacks most of is ELITISM. Ironically, way back in the day when my family was growing up in grand rapids (mi) and we attended the same church as the mouws when he was still starting out as a philosopher at calvin college,he was more of a common man. He was known for smoking a pipe & playing frisbee golf on campus. We would have picnics at various parks with their family & a few others, and he lived in a modest middle-class home.Albeit I must admit he was always aloof. He would never say hi to me directly. It was always stand-offish. I played football. His son,my age, didn't. I was athletic. His son wasn't. Not sure why he socialized with our family b/c my dad ,a pastor, isn't a sophisticated thinker. Maybe he thought we were the best he could find to hobnob with in a place like grand rapids. At the time I didn't know he was a sophisticate (root of the word is sophistry by the way). And I didn't know he didn't believe in soul. And the story goes on. Who would have thought our two families would cross paths again when we both moved to southern california ? And my dad continues to socialize with him & his wife Phyliss to this day,to my befuddlement.

SAVING SOUL, NOT JUST SAVING SOULS, IN CHRISTIAN MINISTRY & FULLER SEMINARY NEWS: this BEGAN as a defense of SOUL blog, and it STILL is, but I am also adding FULLER SEMINARY NEWS to this blog...albeit remember that some of the soul unbelievers are teaching at fuller seminary (ie nancey murphy et al). This blog is not necessarily a defense of Fuller Seminary...just commentary on what is happening. Not everybody is a soul unbeliever at Fuller Seminary.
