These are people without a lot of denominational identity , but they went to a college and university and got their doctorate degree and decided to cash it in by working at a seminary. Even maybe a seminary with which they have no original ties to.
Richard Mouw ,for example, never attended Calvin College as a student, nor Calvin Seminary. He may have had a little bit of affiliation with the Reformed denomination maybe Christian Reformed, but not Calvin itself. Nor Richard Muller.
So what you get with such a person is a professional academic career person without much personality Their primary concern is their career and resume, not any real ties to the institution itself.
Nancey (with an 'e') Murphy herself is off the charts in this regard. As best as I can tell she went to Berkeley and got a doctorate degree I guess- and then she came to Fuller Seminary.
But her case is a little unusual because she seems to have married one of the theologians at Fuller Seminary or maybe this theologian also had Berkeley ties originally- maybe they met there -but the odd thing about it is that he was, if I recall correctly, 50 years older than her !
So the question arises is how much influence this older man had in helping her get a job at Fuller and/or get tenure ?!
You don't usually think of a seminary as a a scam do you, but there are some unusual things that make you wonder if it's not all that meets the eye in some places.
